How to cook Bak Kut Teh

T and I have been craving for Bak Kut Teh for so long and finally, we've decided to cook my very own version of it.
But then, I've decided to share with you guys our recipe.
(Warning: It might not taste the same, try it at your own risk
I'm just kidding HAHAHAHA!
So let's get started.

It actually depends on individual like what kind of ingredients you want to put. For me and T, we bought our favorite food as shown below.

We got this at NTUC and it's actually quite affordable and the quantity and quality is superb!

You need this. This is the key for the Bak Kut Teh to be more fragrant. You need to smash a bit before you put it into your soup.

We decided to use Tofu Puff(which is Tau pok in hokkien) because I simply love them and they will actually absorb the soup and once you bite them, the soup will ooze out like boom!

It's really an ideal type of dish. Specially for soup and steamboat but we choose to put it in my Bak Kut Teh. ( VERY HEALTHY ALREADY)

My love for meatballs and fried bean-curd skin with stuffing will never die. Super ultra perfect ingredient for soup-based food.

Pork Prime Ribs. I'll get the "Pasar" brand because usually their pork ribs are from Australia which I really like about it. And their pork ribs is really tender and full of flavors.

I would prefer a healthy option whereby I add lettuce into my Bak Kut Teh, it's not weird at all actually. From the start, I thought adding lettuce into it will be a bad idea but in fact, it taste better as it seems.

You'll need one tablespoon of dark soya sauce and one tablespoon of light soya sauce to enhance the taste of your Bak Kut Teh and make it darker. (I like dark BKT because it's more presentable and more tastier.)

1) Fill up the pot with water(2 liters of water, you don't have to be precise)
2) Put in all the herbs & shallots and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
3) At the same time, rinse the pork ribs with hot water and add in the ribs and let it simmer for 45 minutes.
4) After 45 minutes, add in tofu puff, meatballs, fried beancurd skin with stuffing and lettuce and let it simmer for around 3 minutes.
5) Remove the lid, sprinkle some salt, add in 1 tablespoon of light and dark soya sauce and adjust to your own liking.
6) Let it simmer for another 2 minutes and serve it hot with a bowl of steam rice accompanied with a small bowl of chili padi with dark soya sauce(you can add in chopped garlic if you like)

VIOLA! Our very own version of Bak Kut Teh(actually we added some shitake mushroom so that our soup will be more richer and tastier.

So there you have it, a bowl of hot Bak Kut Teh soup and you can cook this whenever you are craving for it or you can even cook it with your loved ones. It was really tasty and I had like 4 bowls of rice ( OOPS I KNOW I'M FAT) and it's actually a really simple dish to cook. With great effort and responsibility, I'm sure you can do it!

Stay tuned for more post and well, enjoy your Bak Kut Teh!
